SeeWandel-Climate leaflet published
It is expected that the ecosystem of Lake Constance will change significantly in the coming decades due to the interactions between progressive global warming and invasive species, such as the further spread of the quagga mussel. The aim of the SeeWandel-Climate project is to develop projections to assess the consequences of climate change and the impact of invasive species on the Lake Constance ecosystem and its sustainable use. Beware of stowaways
Mandatory ship registration and cleaning in Swiss cantons to protect water bodies against alien species
Ships that are used in different water bodies can carry and spread alien species. For this reason, a ship registration and cleaning obligation (German abbreviation “SMRP”) has been in force since summer 2024 in the central Swiss cantons of Lucerne, Nidwalden, Obwalden, Schwyz, Uri and Zug, as well as in the canton of Bern. In spring 2025, the cantons of Zurich, Glarus, St. Gallen and Graubünden joined the system.
Anyone wishing to launch a vessel with a licence plate in a water body in any of the aforementioned cantons must report this transfer in advance on a digital platform and have the vessel cleaned at an authorised cleaning facility. The SMRP also applies when changing water bodies within a canton.
